Pop superstar Miley Cyrus recently released a new smash, "Flowers," which has created a fair amount of buzz from fans.
Since the release of the song last week, rumors of the meaning behind the new track have flooded the interwebs. Some fans claim the song is a response to Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man," which her ex Liam Hemsworth supposedly dedicated to her at their wedding. There is also an interesting claim that the music video for "Flowers" was filmed in a house where Hemsworth cheated on her a whopping 14 times.
In a genius move, "Flowers" also features a sample from the 1978 Gloria Gaynor hit "I Will Survive."
In the hands of Gaynor, the song became about the determination to bounce back from a failed relationship and would ultimately emerge as an LGBTQ anthem.
For Cyrus fans, its referencing serves as yet another message to Hemsworth.
I have to say, without knowing anything about the possible meaning(s) of the song, I just loved it instantly. It is a catchy tune, a nice musical arrangement, and the video is beautiful. Miley is in top form, looking gorgeous and although the term "pop icon" is thrown around way too much, I believe this track and video is just another notch in her soon-to-be icon status.
Gloria Gaynor herself gave her blessing on Instagram stating: "I’m in Nashville working on new music and just heard, “Flowers,” for the first time, @MileyCyrus … Your new song carries the torch of empowerment and encourages everyone to find strength in themselves to persevere and thrive. Well done Miley!"
If any fans of Gaynor were quick to comment on the comparison between "Survive" and "Flowers," she quickly would respond with "It's a wonderful song!"
That's what we like to see, queens supporting queens!

Thank you, Miley Cyrus, for showing us how to survive, with a little help from the original queen who knows all about it, Miss Gloria Gaynor!
